Things to do
At Halcyon, you can enjoy top-notch fishing, hiking, whale-watching and surfing on your doorstep. Cast the net a little wider and there’s even more to do. Here are a few of our favourite diversions.
Hit the beach!
One of Halcyon’s biggest drawcards is the idyllic private beach – white sands, safe swimming – less than five minutes’ walk from the house. Further afield, there are three expansive white sand beaches (including one with Blue Flag status) in and around Still Bay. With decidedly balmy water temperatures between November and April, the area is a paradise for beach bums.
Surf spots in Still Bay
Surfers will relish discovering the three top-notch private breaks within walking distance of Halcyon. (Normally you’d have to fly to Indo or the Maldives to have a private wave all to yourself!) What’s more, there are six recognised surf spots within 7km of the house, two of which boast four-star ratings.
Fish for kob, musselcracker, leeries and more. The best fishing in the Still Bay area is the 2km stretch of coastline in front of Halcyon, especially the Masterstok beach area. Feel free to keep one or two fish for the braai (there’s nothing better), but please don’t come here with the intention of filling the deep freeze with fish. Limit your kill, don’t kill your limit.
Spot dolphins and whales
Spot dolphins and whales from your bedroom window. Between July and November, scores of Southern Right Whales descend on the bay to bear their calves, offering some of the best land-based whale watching in the world. Large pods of bottlenose dolphins can be spied all year round.
Explore the rich rock pools near the house with your kids. Marvel at the crabs, sea urchins, octopuses and anemones. Or fish for klipvis with a net or handline.
Hike (or mountain bike!) the 11km Noordkapper Trail between Still Bay and Jongensfontein. Featuring dramatic clifftop views, red lichen-covered rocks and sheltered sandy beaches, the trail passes Halcyon’s front door.
Things to do in and around Still Bay
See the Big Five at Garden Route Game Lodge, just 40 minutes away. Day Visitor game drives depart daily at 11 am and 2 pm, Monday to Sunday.
Ancient Fish Traps
Check out the ancient fish traps near the Still Bay beach parking lot. Built by the Khoisan thousands of years ago, the traps are still in daily use.
Cheese & Wine
Go on a cheese and wine pairing tour at Kasselshoop, our local cheesery.
Kayak with dolphins in the ocean or explore the idyllic Goukou River as it wends its way inland for 10 kilometres. Kayaks are available for hire in town.
